How much does it cost to get rid of a mattress?
Dropping a mattress at the Byron Resource Recovery Centre costs $40 per mattress (double or larger) for 2026-27, plus the trailer and the trip. Northern Removals prices by volume: a mattress is about a cubic metre, around $100, carried out of the house for you. A mattress and base together run about $200.
| Option | The catch | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| DIY at the Byron tip | Trailer, the drive to Myocum, weekend window 8:30 to 11:30 | $40 + your time |
| Tweed on-call pickup | Tweed residents only, two free bookings a year, booked ahead | Free, but you wait |
| Skip bin | Most skip companies surcharge mattresses, roughly $50 to $125 each | Surcharge + hire |
| Northern Removals | From the bedroom, garage or kerb, any day, priced by volume | ≈ $100 in a load |
The maths only tips toward DIY if the trailer is already in your driveway. Once you count the hire, the weekend queue at Myocum and the second pair of hands a queen mattress needs on stairs, the gap closes fast.
Can I put a mattress on the kerb for council pickup?
Not in the Byron Shire. There is no council kerbside collection here, and a mattress on the nature strip counts as illegal dumping, with fines up to $4,000. Tweed Shire residents get two free on-call collections a year; Byron residents get tip vouchers and a weekday courtesy trailer instead.
The kerb does work one way: leave the mattress out, tell Northern Removals where it is, and we collect without you being home. Full detail on vouchers, hours and fees is in the Byron Bay tip guide.
How does mattress pickup work with Northern Removals?
Send a photo or use the 60-second quote, get a number, pick a window. Two movers from Northern Removals carry the mattress from wherever it is, bedroom, top floor, garage, kerb, load it and run it to the tip. The $40 gate fee and the handling are our problem, not yours.
Replacing the bed on moving day? We do that too, at $170 an hour for the full move, and the old mattress can leave on the same truck as a volume charge.
Mattress disposal questions, answered straight
What Byron Shire and Northern Rivers locals ask Northern Removals about getting rid of mattresses, with the numbers in the answers.
- How much does mattress removal cost in the Byron Shire?
- Northern Removals prices mattresses like everything else: $100 per cubic metre on the truck. A mattress on its own takes up about a cubic metre, so around $100; a mattress and base about $200. Doing it yourself, the Byron tip charges $40 per mattress plus the trailer and the trip to Myocum.
- Can I leave a mattress on the kerb in Byron Shire?
- Not for collection. Byron Shire has no council kerbside pickup, and leaving a mattress on the nature strip counts as illegal dumping with fines up to $4,000. You can leave it on the kerb for Northern Removals: tell us where it is and we take it from there.
- Does Northern Removals take the mattress from inside the house?
- Yes. Two movers from Northern Removals carry the mattress out from the bedroom, down the stairs, out of the garage, wherever it is, anywhere in the Byron Shire and Northern Rivers. You do not need to drag it to the door first.
- How fast can a mattress be collected?
- Often same-day. Northern Removals runs rubbish loads across the Byron Shire most days from the Tyagarah depot, and a mattress slots into the truck easily. Call 0468 000 171 or use the 60-second quote and we confirm the window straight away.
- Is it worth adding other junk to a mattress pickup?
- Yes. The truck is already coming and the rate is $100 per cubic metre, so the old bed base, the broken drawers and the garage pile all ride along and you only pay for the space the lot takes up. A mattress-only trip and a small clean-out often cost nearly the same.
