Where is the Byron Bay tip?
The Byron Shire tip is the Byron Resource Recovery Centre, 115 The Manse Road, Myocum NSW 2481, between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. It serves the whole shire and includes the Re-Market tip shop and a free Community Recycling Centre. Northern Removals is based up the road in Tyagarah and runs loads there most days.
Everything goes over the weighbridge on the way in, so fees are charged by weight, not by trailer. Before you tip anything usable, the Re-Market shop takes resellable items for free.
What are the Byron tip opening hours?
The Byron Resource Recovery Centre at Myocum is open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm and weekends 8:30am to 11:30am, closed on all public holidays. That three and a half hour weekend window is the catch: if Saturday is your only free day, the queue is part of the trip.
| Day | Notes | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | Re-Market tip shop keeps the same hours | 8:00am - 4:00pm |
| Saturday and Sunday | A three and a half hour window, expect a queue | 8:30am - 11:30am |
| Public holidays | Every public holiday, all sections | Closed |
How much does the Byron Bay tip cost?
General mixed waste at the Byron tip costs $39.50 per 100kg with an $18 minimum charge for 2026-27. A double or larger mattress is $40, sorted recycling is $10 per 100kg, and scrap metal is $4.50 per 100kg. Sorting a load before you go is the single biggest saving.
| Item | Notes | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| General mixed waste | Minimum charge $18 | $39.50 / 100kg |
| Mattress (double or larger) | Per item | $40 |
| Mixed recycling, cardboard, polystyrene | Minimum charge $5 | $10 / 100kg |
| Scrap metal | Weighed at the gate | $4.50 / 100kg |
| Fridges and air-conditioners | Per item | $50 |
| Solar panels | Per item | $10 |
| Asbestos removal kit (up to 10 sq m) | Kit only, asbestos is not accepted here | $50 |
The arithmetic to remember: 400kg of mixed household waste costs $158 at the gate. A sorted 400kg load of recycling costs $40. Weight is money at Myocum, and mixed is the expensive kind.
What can you take to the Byron tip for free?
The Community Recycling Centre at the Byron tip takes household problem waste free: gas bottles, fire extinguishers, paint, fluoro globes and tubes, car and household batteries, motor and other oils, smoke detectors, and e-waste like TVs and computers. Household quantities only, maximum 20kg or 20 litre containers.
Each rated Byron Shire household also gets two $50 waste disposal vouchers per financial year. Your rates notice is the voucher, so bring it to the weighbridge; it cannot be applied after you pay.
What can't you take to the Byron tip?
Asbestos is the big one. The Byron Resource Recovery Centre is a transfer station and is not licensed to accept asbestos at all. Council sells a $50 kit for removing up to 10 square metres safely; anything more must go through a licensed contractor to a licensed facility. Liquids and commercial chemical quantities are also out.
Northern Removals does not carry asbestos either. If we find it in a clean-out we stop, say so, and point you to the right people. Everything else in a household load, furniture, whitegoods, green waste, renovation offcuts, we take.
Does Byron Shire have a free hard rubbish pickup?
No. Byron Shire has no on-call kerbside collection. Council offers two $50 tip vouchers per household per year and a free bookable courtesy trailer on weekdays instead. Tweed Shire residents get two free on-call pickups a year; Byron residents do not. Leaving items on the nature strip risks fines up to $4,000.
The courtesy trailer is genuinely useful if you have a tow bar and a free weekday: pick up 8:30am, back by 2pm, Byron Shire only. The gap it leaves, heavy loads, no tow bar, weekends, stairs, is the gap Northern Removals fills at $100 per cubic metre, loaded and tipped, any day of the week.
Tip run yourself, or have Northern Removals take it?
A DIY tip run from Byron Bay costs the gate fee, $39.50 per 100kg, plus your morning: loading, the drive to Myocum, the weighbridge queue, unloading. Northern Removals charges $100 per cubic metre to load from inside the house and handle the whole run, so a box-trailer-sized load is about $200, done.
| DIY tip run | Northern Removals | |
|---|---|---|
| Gate fee | $120 to $160 for 300 to 400kg mixed | Handled in the rate |
| Loading | You, twice: into the trailer, out at the tip | Two movers, from inside the house |
| Transport | Your car and trailer, or the weekday courtesy trailer | Our truck, any day |
| Your time | Half a day, weekend window 8:30 to 11:30 | None. Point at it and we carry |
| Total | $120 to $160 plus the morning | About $200, all in |
Honest version: if you own a trailer, the load is light and you enjoy the drive, do it yourself and keep the difference. If it is heavy, sharp, mouldy or upstairs, get a 60-second quote and spend Saturday at the beach. Rates are on the pricing page.
